The idea has grown beyond the initial vision. A series of pure meditations; as the 'water rings' expand towards infinity reaching out beyond the edges of the painting, they take me out into my thoughts at any particular moment. Each time I come back to the painting they take me somewhere else. Equally, 'the beginning of rain', the precious few moments of individual raindrop clarity before the clouds open everything disseminates into a torrent that is every day.
Never one to be contained by any medium, we have over the years made continuous leaps forward to take the watercolour medium in new directions opening new possibilities, & have once again done so here. A lateral move perhaps, I am now painting with watercolours directly on gessoed norwegian birch panels as well as continuing to work on paper. Working on gessoed panels is akin to painting on kitchen counter top with every stroke beading up streaking, smearing, misbehaving like so much split coloured water, but I am dazzled by the new possibilities in textures, the visual strength, immediacy & directness of the finished paintings; the results have a 'terse-ness' to them. Some paintings are further worked with acrylics; others, with pastels, & as such are 'mixed media' paintings.
I finish/complete the paintings by painting around the edges; as such they can be hung without a frame or floated in a float frame. To secure the watercolour I lightly apply 2 coats of spray fixative; once dry, lay on 2 coats of acrylic varnish, (same as any oil / acrylic), sealing it permanently against the elements.

As you know, I love your gesso paintings - they are joyously colourful, animated with light. You have always been a master of water, but your new works, as meticulous as ever, are brighter and more exuberant. At the same time they are profoundly contemplative and quiet. This paradox intrigues me, and renders your work captivating.

They may feel so alive because they capture light in a way that plays with the moment, and then slightly differently the next moment and changed again, the moment after that. So they are continuously fresh and vibrant.

The paintings are impressions of the particular.
Water spilling reflections across the surfaces of silent wetlands. Unique moments in time. Individual meditative moments, quiet places that neither reveal themselves easily, nor ask anyone to specifically to come there, single natural pearls antecedent to / breaking free of any necklaced existence.

Zarowsky’s shared experience is what opens up on these webpages; his ability to lose one’s edges, to become one with nature, as evidenced by his natural gift of, ability for, natural, original, unique composition expressed thru painting offers up and places one in contact with a much needed rediscovery of Canadian wilderness, direct /immediate, not seen since the early days of Tom Thomson and a natural progression from Thomson’s works.

Spring, summer and fall are wonderful. And the birth to death of the seasons cycle, a tad linear in its plodding progression, does lead us to winter. Winter, takes my breath away. Chaotic, unpredictable, repeatedly trying to overwhelmingly please by dressing up all night in white to show off come magical morning.

Working with the element we know best, we continue our use of light as a means of personal expression evoked by changes in an endless rhythm of strong, bright colors absorbing the sub-tropical heat and humidity. Color is the buildings, the plants, the birds, the very names of everything. We end up feeling the true subject here is color.

We became friends, the chickens and moi; i was taken off the task, after, in my desire to restore their calcium levels i fed them the egg shells from a breakfast of bacon n eggs, only to be told i had opened the door for them to now cannabolize the eggs they were laying. picky picky picky.

The landscapes are meditative in so far that our underlying and connecting commitment to Nature through them is all about light and water, neither of which can be painted directly. Treating light as pure source the paintings are an expression/realization of its effects; water being transparent, always different, lets us explore/express it through the very reflections that try to confine it._
You will find something more in woods than in books._
Trees and stones will teach you that which you can never learn from masters.
_
~Saint Bernard

Buttermilk skies in a December Paris morning; Salt and sea air bouncing all over aged canal building walls in Venice; the mistral intertwining light with sound as it sweeps down thru the mountains in Provence; the brilliant white waterfront buildings centered creamily in a blue sky/blue water cookie that is the Cyclades; essences of perfect moments all; then we decided to paint interiors that had to be alive. Being funky, they sparkle with life.
